Guys, As it applies to you, What do you think the Number 1, principle of Workplace Safety is?. For me the Number 1 thing would be: - Think about what you are to do and how will this affect you and those around you.
(With respect to loss of supply, noise, your own safety while you are doing the job,machines re-starting once the supply is re-instated)

Thinking is a great answer. How about being prepared for the worst? (as far as PPE and also knowing what could happen)

I don't do much hot work,but am frequently on tall ladders or scaffolds(as most of us are). The thing that helps me the most is being deliberate and taking things one step at a time. Keeping the walkboard(s) clean/uncluttered.
Taking time to be sure that your ladder/scaffolding is set up properly and braced correctly.

We are being overwhelmed by legislation that proposes to do the thinking for us, initself a detriment to the very goal sought.

A while back our safety officer had a bunch of clear, adheasive-backed labels printed and put on the mirrors in all the restrooms. The message was
YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE PERSON MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SAFETY
If you don't take care for yourself, no system in the world can keep you safe.

I think the #1 most overlooked safety principle would have to be, If you don't know the answer then for everyones sake ASK!

Guys,
There are some really good comments here,
But, we aren't talking Rocket Science, here.
Basically all that Work-place Safety requires is that everyone uses the brains that they were given when they were born.
I think that lack of knowledge+ lack of information on a Construction site, is a real downfall to Apprentices.
