Greg, I don't recognize your use of "stinger." The splices in my dad's day were twisted, long, folded over, and then dipped into the solder pot before being taped with rubber and then friction tape. They last forever, long after the insulation is ready to fall off the conductors. Is the stinger the folded end I know, or something else?
