There are various reasons why a thread may be closed.
Probably the most common is when a DIYer finds the site, and asks questions that might get them or someone else hurt.
Another is when members begin "flaming" one another, rather than discussing subjects in a professional and civilized mannner.
A 3rd is when the site is used for advertising a product or service.

Many times this is done as a precautionary measure, and allows the oftentimes good information contained in that thread to remain, rather than allowing it to continue and degrade until it must be deleted completely.

If there was no control of this type, the Forum would become a free-for-all, and you would be seeing full blown fighting, bad DIY info ala "Bob Vila", and Viagra ads before you could blink an eye.

There are other Electrical Forums that allow most any kind of thread or post to continue or remain. They are typically not very successful.
