Did you hear it in reference to a piece of machinery being analyzed for vibration?

Hertz refers to oscillations per second. Sound and other vibrations are correctly measured in hertz.

Did the people using the word know what they were talking about?
This field is full of techno-babble. And also full of people who barely know what they are doing, but can sound pretty impressive to the un-educated.

Sounds like John Boy & Billy's "Wordy Words" to me.

Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example.

Maybe you were buffaloed. It took me a long time before I was confident about what I know(not that it is a lot). I always figured that every one knew better than me. But, once I started questioning people who seemed to be so sure of themselves, it was interesting to see them back-pedal and hem and haw. Next time you see them, just ask them what they mean by "Hertz vibration". You might be in for some entertainment!
