Denny,
Diesel fuel is not a flammable liquid (it is combustible) and the diesel fuel handling area is not a classified area.

just installed one. inspector told us to explosion proof everything within 10' of the tank all the way around. if it would have been gasoline it would have been a bigger radius.

You have to make sure the conduit or conduits feeding the Diesel Skid do not pass thur a classified area. If they do then they require to be treated as classified . This is done a lot where theres both Gas and Diesel pumps in the same area.

Indeed. I have a friend who is a retired trucker and he tells of the time that some manager at a depot balled at him to put a cigarette out while he was pumping diesel into the truck.

He said he just threw the butt into the diesel tank and you've never seen somebody run for cover so fast! Guess he proved the point though! [Linked Image]

514.3 Classification of Locations.
(A) Unclassified Locations. Where the authority having jurisdiction can satisfactorily determine that flammable liquids having a flash point below 38°C (100°F), such as gasoline, will not be handled, such location shall not be required to be classified.
Diesel has a flash point above 100°F and therefore the area is not required to be classified.

That would only require that the conduits have seals at the boundries. It would not require the use of explosionproof wiring methods at the diesel dispensing area.

This is true although if on the same concrete island as a gas pump I treat them the same no matter the distance apart.
Fuel oil generally has a flash point above 125 f I believe.

If they are close to each other the diesel dispenser may fall within the classified area for the gas dispenser and if so, then the electrical equipment within the classified area must meet the classification.
