Our office received a call one Friday afternoon and after listening to the caller, the secretary forwarded the call to me. Here are the basics:
The gent, obviously elderly, asked me if we stood behind the appliances we sold. As we were an EC, I attempted to explain that we didn’t sell appliances. He informed me that he purchased a DW, refrigerator, range, washer, and dryer from us about 20 years ago and the DW had given it up. He was correct that in the early days the company did sell appliances. After a lengthy conversation he told me he was just kidding and had been very pleased with the service the appliances had given. I had an idea about getting some free publicity and on Monday we presented him with a full set of new appliances, with installation. I arranged for TV and newspaper coverage of the event and no amount of paid advertising could have equaled the good will and business we received. Sometime you’ve just got to take advantage of a situation.

Nice work, RR!! I imagine it will return to you in many unexpected ways (and a few predictable ones as well...)

Rowdy,

As a bonus I bet it made you feel good too!!
I've done free service calls for people every once in awhile myself. There are people that do really need help changing a bulb now and then.

Nice to help out when you can. Free publicity is an extra bonus as well. I recently installed a service in an old barn that was saved by a local group. I secured donated materials from my supplier and did the job for free. It received a couple of mentions in the local paper. They actually wanted to take pictures of me working but I wasn't really into that. It was nice to appreciated for once!
