As in "I second that motion. All in favor? all opposed? That motion is now carried and entered in the forum minutes." LOL

There are various reasons why a thread may be closed.
Probably the most common is when a DIYer finds the site, and asks questions that might get them or someone else hurt.
Another is when members begin "flaming" one another, rather than discussing subjects in a professional and civilized mannner.
A 3rd is when the site is used for advertising a product or service.

Many times this is done as a precautionary measure, and allows the oftentimes good information contained in that thread to remain, rather than allowing it to continue and degrade until it must be deleted completely.

If there was no control of this type, the Forum would become a free-for-all, and you would be seeing full blown fighting, bad DIY info ala "Bob Vila", and Viagra ads before you could blink an eye.

There are other Electrical Forums that allow most any kind of thread or post to continue or remain. They are typically not very successful.

I asked that the thread be closed, i moved the topic to the wednesday night business chat, so everyone could have the chance to ask any questions on the topic, if you need additional information there is a contact link on the thread.

Thank you,

Les

I think that sometimes it is best to close a thread.

Besides the reasons mentioned above, sometimes a thread goes off on so many tangents that it begins to bear little resemblence to the original topic. This makes it hard to locate, or follow, the discussion.

Another situation might be where the same few views are repeated "ad nauseum." Things would then get retty tedious, fast!

I will say that the main reason I like this site is the gererally upbeat tone, and the mutual respect the members show each others. This has remained so, only because the various powers have exercised their options on the rare occasions it's been necessary. Without that guiding hand, things would quickly degrade.

The various moderators will also contact a poster directly, should thing start getting questionable. I have myself been asked to clarify, moderate, or edit some of my posts- and, in fairness, the advice was appropriate!

(After all, even I have a rough day every now and then!)

Mr wilkie,
I have to agree with the other Moderators comments.
Having read your first two posts in this thread, it makes it rather sound like you don't like the manner in which us Moderators work.
I'm sorry I can't help you there, but that is why we have Moderators.
An out of control Forum here would help no-one.
I would personally back another Moderator doing thier "job" where it is warranted, to the hilt.
It's not an easy job to do, discretion plays a HUGE part.
Please bear with us, we don't like deleting things, so please don't give us cause to have to.
As simple as that. [Linked Image]

I too have been asked to edit my own posts on this and other forums, and I always have willingly complied.

These forums do not charge money and have rules we agree to when we join. That said IMO it goes without saying the people footing the bill for these forums have full rights to run them as they see fit.

I agree entirely.

I can't tell you how much it bothers me to delete or edit someone else's post. If editing needs to be done I ask the person to do it themselves as they can edit but keep the intent the same.

I am strongly against censorship, but there are rules here and they have served this forum well as long as I have been a member.

No profanity

No Flaming (That's fighting)

No talk about subjects that can not be resolved, Politics, Religion, Unions, Immigration etc.

wilkie I certainly hope you stick around but I doubt we are going to change what has worked well for quite a few years to suit you.
