I wrote to the people issuing electrician's licenses and they told me that they didn't know how many active (i.e. working) electricians there are. However, currently 12500 people hold an unlimited license for work at any voltage while 14300 hold an unlimited license for voltages below 1000V only.

Finally there are nearly 14000 limited licenses (disconnect/connect/replace) but those don't count as electricians.

The license expires when you turn 75, but many renew it after that. This probably means that many of the electricians active in 1970 still hold a license.
