The maps are at quite different scales. Also I cannot see what projection they are in and whether they are equal area or not. This can make a huge difference - remember those maps of the world that appear to make Greenland the largest country on Earth!
USA = 9 450 720 km2; Germany = 356 109 km2.
Thats about 26.5 times the size.
