At what point would code require us to install a lighting outlet in a closet or storage area? Is there any square foot dimension that would dictate installing a lighting outlet?

What you're really asking is : What makes a room "habitable?"

Not only habitable rooms - What about the "room used for storage" requiring a lighting outlet?

Another part of the issue is- Do we consider a clothes closet a storage area?

I don't think it is nessesarily an NEC thing. 210.70 touches on it but does not define what a "habitable room" is. Nor does it mention closets. I guess if you can walk inside it, it would be habitable. But maybe in other building codes for rooms of certain size etc, to have so many lumens of light. Most building codes also have mandated available daylight too, for all but closets.

As for storage areas, 210.70 (A) 2+3, its kinda vague and at the same time specific to certain places, but does not specifially say "closets" at all.

I'm not positive, but the IRC I believe says 70 sq. ft. to be a habitable room. Although this is not a closet or a storage area.Or a "storage closet"...what then....???
