I just read on another forum about contractors using romex connectors as temporary bugs for service drops.
Kinda scary application to me.
Any thoughts?

Sandro,
"bugs" as in split bolt connectors.
I can't see a romex connector working as these, but then again I've never tried it..

A "bug" is common US trade slang for a split-bolt connector. I've heard of the romex connector trick, as well. Sounds like a really bad idea, especially for the neutral..

See it frequently. Since it is the grey area of NEC local inspection and the NESC utility co. it is hard to call it a violation. When it fails the electrician pays. I have seen installations that waited years to get connected because of a paper work mix up. It goes along with the romex connector on the end of the conduit run to bond the grounding electrode. Definately a violation. U.L. has yet to establish the current carrying ability of a NM cable conector. Alan--
Alan-- If it was easy, anyone could do it.

Bugs, ok, never heard it before.
We sometimes refer to split bolts as Burndy's.

I can't express what i think on this subject, it's a family site.
"Kinda scary application to me."
And it should be!

Years ago, when I was an itty-bitty helper, I was told to use Tomic connectors as temporary connectors when reattaching a service drop.
In case anyone doesn't recognize "Tomic", they're the old-fashioned two-part-plus-screws type of NM cable clamp that we find when doing service upgrades.
Little did I know.

Isn't that the cord clamp that is usually a part of a cord cap? The kind with a metal shell? For SO cable, not romex? Next thing you'll see is someone using ty-raps to hold connections together [This message has been edited by wa2ise (edited 08-12-2006).]
