hello all, I'm trying to win a bet here. My boss said that you can run romex underground in condit . I said you need to run either U.F or thwn. he also said that thhn was fine in the ground as long as it is in conduit. we all know that romex isn't sutable for wet locations, but i cant find in the code that says that underground even in condit is a wet location .. any help would be apprecated . thanks

Look in the Definitions under "Location-Wet"

Also, THHN is not fine in the ground if it is in conduit. (I haven't seen any THHN only wire myself, only THHN/THWN)

Now do I get 1/2 the money you win? [Linked Image]

From Article 100, Definitions, in the 2005 NEC

Location, Wet. Installations under ground or in concrete slabs or masonry in direct contact with the earth..................

The definition is essentially the same in the 1940 NEC, too [Linked Image]
