i know you can't have a buried junction box. but can you have a box with only one wire in the box terminated and capped with wire nuts and buried?

Exception: Listed boxes shall be permitted where covered by gravel, light aggregate, or noncohesive granulated soil if their location is effectively identified and accessible for excavation.

I think we need a better definition of what Clydesdale means by buried.

The exception, by the wording given here, clearly refers to an outdoor location.

If we're talking indoors, inside some form of wall, floor or ceiling, the answer would be no, not permitted.
