Use pin terminals as you said or just splice on some 1, 2, or 3 AWG.

Isn't it odd that code will allow us to splice, butt crimp, or pin terminal conductors oversized for voltage drop , but it is a cardinal sin to clip a couple of strands out of the conductor! UL has approved devices for splices, crimps and pin terminal, but a field adaption is forbidden. If someone (or some organization) would pay the $$$ necessary to get UL or FM to test these terminations, maybe we could all save a few bucks for the rest of our lives. I guess the biggest problem would be how many strands are allowed to be clipped?
