We own one. My wife plays it more than I do. The PS2's have more to chose from as far as games go, and can play DVD movies with the optional remote. With the larger selection of game titles, you should be able to find something both appropriate to the age of the player and something he might like. The PS1 are becomming obsuleit, but are still circulating. You can even play the PS1 games on a PS2 machine.

GETELECTRIC, Get the playstation 2 the price is not that bad, the playstation one is basicly obsolet. Or you could go with an Xbox which is a good system as well. Either system will alow your son to watch dvd movies and even play online if hooked to high speed internet. I have 3 boys and a little girl. We just bought the oldest boy(10yrs old) a new xbox and are getting ourselves a playstation 2 we also bought a ps one for the younger boys since they are only $50 bucks and they can use the older boys ps one games. Our kids have had ps ones, twos and now the x box since they were 2 and 3yrs old. If you have any questions let me know.

My son, 13, has been enjoying his PS2 immensely. He was so motivated to get it, that he coughed up ½ the purchase price.
About the DVD playback. . .works great, and the included game controller will run it in a pinch. Admittedly, the extra remote is nice, but not necessary.

We have a PS2 also. We initially bought an X-Box but returned it when we found that age-appropriate games were less plentiful and everywhere we had looked for X-box games had an abundant selection for the PS2 in the "E" rated category.
We have enjoyed the challenge (and humility) that comes from playing the games along with the kids once in a while. They love the fact that we'll spend time doing something they're really excited about and love even more the possibility of winning against Mom & Dad. We started with Frogger and Antz games and the kids have progressed into more advanced ones (while I'm still stuck in Antz trying to get my 'grasshopper' car to race the right direction).

PS2 is under the tree for the kids this year, any suggestions on which games to get- would be greatly appreciated. The kids are (14) boy and (13,12 & 10) girls. Tiff

Tiff, Considering the amount of music in your youngun's lives, checkout Frequency, or Amplitude, or MTV Music Generator 2. They can be picked up used at sites like EBGames . The Tony Hawks skateboard games have been sought by my son and his friends.

The music one is good, if your boys like tony hawk there great we have all of them, tiger woods golf is great, NFL live or 2004 are great. Or you could go with the option of getting one game for the kids and a gift card to walmart so they could pic a game of there choice after xmas. there are also alot of used game stores everywere and sometimes they have great deals on used games and you can trade in your old games that you don't like anymore or have beaten.
