Years ago I remember Coleman telling me over the phone to do just what is being described there with the 4 wire power cord and the 3 prong male plug.

I wired in a Coleman generator around Y2K. The instruction manual said to make a shorting plug where only the neutral and ground where tied together with a #12 wire. This solved the problem of using a 6-20R on the generator.
I would rather follow the mfrs instruction than "modify" the gen and loose the UL listing.
