I saw a job where the customer ran UF in PVC pipe underground. Now I know your not supposed to run NM but what about UF? Is it legal? I would think it would be.

The 99NEC permits UF and NM cables to be run in pipe(NM can't be in a "wet" location). 300-5(c) requires cables installed under buildings to be in a raceway. 300-5(d) requires direct buried conductors and cables emerging from the ground to be in an enclosure or raceway from the minimum cover distance to at least 8' above finished grade.

What about an assembly being in a raceway?
In this case UF and NM are basically the same thing, no?

Using PVC to protect NM cable from physical damage is spelled out in 334.15(B)

And 340.10(4) tells us that the rules of 334 will apply to UF cable.

Also 300.5(D)(1) requires direct buried cables and conductors emerging from grade are to be protected from damage.
