I won't condemn everything from China quality wise (politics are a separate matter best dealt with in another forum). I do agree if something doesn't have a valid NRTL listing it is suspect but China builds to the price point western buyers demand and that is where you are trading quality for price.
This all does remind me of post WWII Japan. In the 50s and early 60s, Japan had a reputation for cheap, unreliable junk. Then Sony, Honda, Toyota and Yamaha came along and ate our lunch, using quality and reliability as their selling point but that "cheap" thing disappeared.
