You are so right about trimming the trees. The streets around by me has trees and woods on both sides of the road and the POCO only comes around maybe every 5-8 years to trim trees and with that they only cut back 5' from the primary and 3' from the secondary wires. Also the top primary wire is just a piece of #6 Cu running between poles. There isn't even a messenger wire, so when a tree limb hits the #6 it snaps real easy. If there was a messenger wire, it could at least hold up against a good size branch.

I think the primary here is 2 ga 1350 alloy aluminum but I never climbed up to check it. wink
I did see some on the ground once and that is what it looked like but I didn't get that close. I assume it was dead but that is not something I was betting my life on.
