Direct strikes are nearly impossible to mitigate unless the attachment point is an intended air terminal or strike termination device. In the case of Mr. Gomes, almost anything and everything could be affected by the path of surge current through the structure.
I find it interesting that a professor of physics that specializes in lightning doesn't have an LPS installed on his three story home...

I have a Lacrosse 2308, connected to a "throw away" laptop and net connected. (Heavy Weather Beta 2 and Heavy Weather Publisher software) http://esteroriverheights.com/esteroweather.jpg The wind sensor is on a 2x2 aluminum post above the garage with a 3/8" copper air terminal above that, connected to the ground with 2ga copper. The wind sensor actually sticks out to the side of the post so when I had my lightning hit I assume the shot actually went past it
