I've paid by piece before. I prefer it because that's the way the GC's pay us. It motivates the individual or crew to work fast and long hours. It's mazing how much more gets done when they control their own destiny. The big problem comes with the neatness of the work and corner cutting, but this can be managed if they know what's expected. Currently everyone if hourly, but I've been thinking about trying it again.
