Do anyone know whether we need an exit signs/lights at the stairway for a 6-family apartments, 4 stories high bldg??? I am in NYC.

How about a 3-family 3 or 4 stories bldg?

You will find your answer in NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. I think you will find they are required and also emergency lights will be required.
