I just purchased a real traffic light, and it is already wired to be plugged directly into a 120V outlet. What I am looking for is a relay of some kind that will allow the three lights to flash randomly. I went to Radio Shack, and they had relays, but none of them seemed to be what I am looking for. Does anyone know if there is such a think as an inline relay? Basically, something that I can cut a wire, put a relay in, and it will work? Any help is appreciated!!!
I'd recommend that you find a local Electrician that does Traffic signal work and pay him to rewire it. You can't do it as simply as you describe, and it's not the type of thing we should delve into here.

We used to work on a lot of carnival rides and equipment. We used 3,4 & 5 pole chaser units. These make the poles flash in a sequential order continuously so the lights look like they are moving down the line. They are electronic now (they weren't always)& almost dummy proof to install. They have one feed, one neutral and a bunch of switch legs. Most only flash the poles in a constant order tho. (i.e 123123123123etc). It's been a while since I had to buy one and being old I forgot who we got them from. Try a yahoo search for "carnival suppiles" or something like that. Good luck
