While I was working on a resturaunt, the customer decided to save a few bucks by doing his own neon sign. Please note the lack of stand-offs on this metal front....and the lack of any bushing where the 15KV wire pokes through. Renosteinke. Larger Cropped Image . One little thing John, Is that red "structure" only supported from below by that small piece of angle iron?.

Fact is, I have no idea how that bit of facing is attached.

In all fairness, the food is quite decent; the place is kept clean; the atmosphere is pleasant, and there is considerable variety to the buffet menu.
These folks know how to run a restaraunt. They know how to cook. They just don't know beans about electric work- yet, like do many others, they have an attitude of :how hard can it be to attach two wires?"
Indeed, that was exactly the argument they had, as they tried (unsuccessfully) to make the neon light up. :-)

Reno: Did anything else light up here at this job? We have a mexican restaurant here that, until lately, sported lots of neon tubing, complete with nails to hold the tubes in place - No insulators, no standoffs, wiring ranging from what appeared to be automotive ignition wire to zip cord, and transformers attached to the roof and siding with more nails . Fortunately, a patron noticed one of the eaves of the building on fire one night, and told the owner, who called 911. Minor damage done, and in a week's time every bit of neon was gone. I have a 'sign pro' running around doing the same quality work. Came out of a channel letter UL sign, no bushings, etc, to about 10' of skelton neon. Left the Thai rest. with a notice and a promise of $500 fine if not corrected.
We had a local rest. in Union County supposedly burn to the slab from a 'neon' sourced fire.
Another good one is the 'open box, add water, and have neon outline lighting instant package deal'. Seems the weekend and/or 'after 4:00PM' installs are increasing again. (Inspectors 7:30-4:00) Get caught, no permit....$500; unsafe...$500 No Lic. (State...$$$$$$)

The Neon in the "Buffet" part works...put in by sign company, made by sign shop...the halogen light above works, put in by yours truly.
But none of the DIY stuff functions.

Sorta answers their question "How hard can it be?", don't it.
There are 10 types of people. Those who know binary, and those who don't.
