NEC=Logical?...not at all.
We've had to replace the grey marking tape on a job's 480/277 feeders (about 20) to get it to pass a final inspection. I thought it was a BS call, but the inspector (unfortunately correctly) stated "I don't write the Code, I just enforce it."
This little lesson cost us a day on completion due to the re-inspect necessary.
By the time the electrician's filthy hands were done with the white tape, it was grey anyway...S

The use of gray tape will likely be permitted in the '05 code.
