Actually made one of those, only it was a double duplex affair ( box, receptacles, and cover) and just shoved in the wall.. All " goodies" were wrapped up and sat down in the wall cavity... worked good for the time being.

That seems like a great idea. You could use an old work box for easy access and stability. Hiding everything down in the wall is probably the best place for it. Even though there is only a thin piece of drywall in front of it, Very few people would take the time to even think of that.
