Anyone that does old-work residential has probably come across the same thing- light fixture somewhere wasn't putting out enough light, so someone puts in a "better" 75-100 watt light bulb in a 60-watt max fixture, eventually it cooks the fixture, and the plaster around the fixture, and the insulation on the wires. So I was talking with my dad today and he came up with the idea of something like the S-type fuse adaptors in the lights that would make it so that only a special 60 or 40 watt light bulb could be installed. Or even have a thermal coupling installable in old fixtures, I think it'd be a good idea, landlords could put it in all their rental properties, cut down on energy usage and wire/plaster damage.

what do you think?
