I just bought a house in Idaho where, thankfully, the AFCI requirement was exempted by the state. So there are a few states and jurisdictions with common sense it seems.
That said, if I were to do anything here in So Cal, I would install the AFCI's for inspection then replace them with standard breakers after the inspection is signed off.
