If you want an interesting walk around the block, take your clamp and look at the current on the ground wires coming down the poles. With permission, look at the current on your neighbor's ground electrode conductors. Compare that to what you saw on the poles. It is clear there is a lot of unintentional current flowing around in the dirt. Wye distribution insures the dirt is a significant current path.
