For myself, I've always regarded any path of conduction to be a CONDUCTOR.

To my mind, that is why the Code does not use the term WIRE.

Compression terminals -- conductors

Ilsco taps -- conductors

Mechanical lugs -- conductors ( they even have temp ratings )

etc.
