GA sparky,
Here in NJ, the NFPA doesn'y classify the res. septic system. So sec. 500 of the NEC doesn't apply here. However we try to seal off the smell/gas from following the pipe back into the house. Most contractors also leave a lockable disconnect for the motor (Under the 1999 NEC, some the disconnect in sight does not apply here, yet) and they leave splice boxes out in the yard with a UL approved splice box so that they can access the splice later. These boxes are either UL approved for direct burial or else the splice is made above the ground in an approve splice box. ( FS box or something bigger depending on how many slpices they have.)
