I worked a concert where the sound guy insisted on bringing in his own lighting rig... Had a wooden box built in similar fashion, with metal switches. Used the damn thing for "effects" during a concert; great effect, hearing "click click" in sync with the lights changing.
That's why we generally keep the sqweeks (sound guys) from doing anything other than play with their mics.
