Bill; read that one, which is where i got the term "floater". It seems it was also popular in attics, as i see many older installs with unsecured boxes.

addressing the old temp rating wire, do you recall some disscussion on simply pigtailing new 90deg NM in the serving JB???
It didn't really seem to me that pigtailing would satisfy the concerns. We've got some new People here now, why don't you start a Thread on the subject. I think it's an Important topic.
Thanks for the interesting replies. In fact, I hadn't really considered a true floating box as this seems somewhat dangerous to me. I thought, however, that I might be able to justify fixing the j-box to the joist adjacent to the removable lighting fixture. In that way, the box would be within view and workable via the hole in the ceiling. From the replies, I suspect that's stretching the defintion of "accessible" for most here. I may have to rethink this.
