Add to that, the internet. Word gets around really fast these days; just look at how much information gets passed around in this forum about what works and what doesn't work.

I find Amazon to be a very useful place to research products that they carry. Once there are a dozen or two reviews of a product, you really get a good cross-section of how a product is performing in a lot of different circumstances. Ten years ago, that information just wasn't available.
