Lithonia Ameri-Can had the sticker that you removed to make it IC. I don't quite understand why, it was basically an IC can which can always be used in non-IC situations. The new Lithonias don't have the sticker.

There is an alternative, if you have attic access: keep the insulation 3" away. We mad a wire-mesh cage to surround 4" non-IC cans.

They were 12" cubes, made from + shaped 1/2" wire mesh, sometimes called "rat wire" or "metal cloth". The inspector loved them.

Larry that is an alternative but it is also a violation of the energy codes in many places and also shoddy work in my veiw. I don't think I'd want my heat or a/c going into the attic.

Only shoddy if done in a shoddy manner. You have to get a little more insulation to "tuck" it all in, just like when you put your kid to bed. Make it all cozy.
