Well, as I recall, they were white wires. 2 were connected to 2 pole baseboard heat circuits, another to a single pole. No labels on the panel cover of course. I agree, splices dont make sense because it looks like more than enough wire. The mashed ends actually seemed to be much larger gauge than the wiring. I'm tempted to go back and take one out.

My monitor ain't that great but they look like 1/2" copper with 1/2 X 3/8 od sweat reducers on the ends.
But why ?

Guys,
I'd have to go along with SparksNmore here.
I'm pretty sure that I've seen parts like that on US Refrigeration gear (as in part of the liquid lines).
I could be totally wrong though.

Actually, they did look like copper pipe with caps covered with shrink tubing. I am definately going to have to go back!

Some sort of EMI suppression? It almost looks like a smaller version of a ferrite bead choke balun used to keep RF off the shield of coax.
