I always right click on my 3MB+ jpeg and open it with MS Paint. Then, I resize and/or crop it as needed, and save as with an "a" suffix.

Gimp is pretty good and considering that it’s free, it’s pretty spectacular.

If you want something more photography oriented I recommend DarkTable which are sort of comparable to Lightroom .

Darktable is similar to Lightroom in use case, and GIMP is similar to Photoshop.

Given that for most photo editing you want Lightroom, not Photoshop, you probably want Darktable, not GIMP. I have very limited personal experience with either.

My Go - To Program is a 20 year old version of Jasc Paint Shop Pro. It does what I need...

I've got a much more recent version of it, as well as half dozen other programs, but just haven't had the time or need to learn how to navigate them.

You can try another software.
