Unpermitted HVAC installs were the norm around here for years but they are getting a lot better about it. On the up side, my county will pre sell blank permits to the installers that they call in on the recorder when they need to use them for an unplanned swap out on a service call, then they call in the final and the inspection goes into the queue.
That was complicated a bit tho, when our energy code started requiring a manual J on any condenser install.
The old days of just saying "it looks like 3 tons to me" are gone ... or so they hope. I am not sure how closely the calculations are scrutinized.

The State recently enacted licensing for HVAC contractors. This new lic. will allow the to reconnect a CU to an existing disco/whip. They will also be allowed to do furnaces from scratch under this lic.

Previously, they had an EC to pull the permits for the CUs. Who actually did the job is debatable.

Permit forms are available on the Twp website, and also at the State web. Hard copies are available at our counter.

Emergency replacements of AC and/or heat require a phone call to the municipality, and paperwork within 3 days.

The HVAC contractor can connect to an existing disconnect here too. They still want the mechanical inspector to look over the installation.
