The point is when automatic disconnection can happen. With earthing, the protective device can disconnect as soon as a fault occurs or a faulty appliance is plugged in/turned on. Without, it can only disconnect when current flows through someone touching the faulty appliance. Earthing reduces the likelihood of receiving an electric shock.
