Google NO SCRIPT. It's oriented towards Firefox and kin.
This is a free download that does pretty much exactly what you're describing.
I've found that it stabilizes my computer.

No Script requires that you enable them. By default, most java scripts are shut off.
Uninstalling No Script is no problem.
