The gauge, length, and load all mater.
To run a 1 or 2 amp screw gun a couple of hundred feet away #14 would work fine
sheet rockers do it all the time (maybe not a good group to use)
But if you want to cut bundles of metal studs in a 15 amp chop saw the same distance out
it better be #10.
