i did see that in few place but not too often they do that.
that photo i did see i can see why they extend it because there is two water or steam pipes below of the box and that box look bigger and it cant hit the pipes.
really IMO if i do that i just build up the spacer to bring it out over the pipes using 2X4 or multi 2X4 stacked up
