Connect so your meter reads positive.
Black is -
Red is +

When charging, + to + (red to red)
and - to - (black to black)

Voltage can vary 10% or more, but the current will determine the charge rate and time to full charge.

For Nicads, if the capacity of the battery is say, 1200 mAh, then the 14 hour charge should be 120mAh and trickle charge would be 1.2 mAh.

I'm going more on my Model Airplane experience here than for anything I've done at work, so I'm hoping the same rules apply...
