I've been trying to track down some lower-powered versions of these in red or orange.

All my usual ports of call stock regular white versions from 5 watts upward, but the only colored types I can find start at 15W.

Does anyone know if colored versions are actually manufactured in 9 or 11W ratings? If so, any idea of a source?

I didn't know that these lamps were available in colours Paul.

How about the indicator coloring paints of yesteryear, or food coloring dyes?

I've seen them in one of our Bunnings hardware stores here, but they are 12v and fit halogen sockets...must be a market for coloured downlights? I think they were low powered..5W maybe? And I would guess they were cold cathode too, given the thickness of the tube was probably only 4mm or so.

Nah, that would be too fast, perhaps they just tossed them into the sea and let the ocean currents send them here.

I take it that they are for power saving or a low level of heat generated by the bulbs?.

They're actually linked with the very long-running saga of the mobile home and PV/wind system in this thread .

We're putting the regular white CFLs in most of the light fittings (spiral types due to restricted space), but the owner wants a couple of colored bulbs for decorative lighting (alcoves etc.), but being on the inverter system wants to keep the loading as low as possible.

I think he wants a couple of red or orange bulbs for the backlighting in the gas heater too.

i Know you can get 240v 5 or 10 watt yellow ones in Australia designed to not atract bugs, will try and find out what brand but i think they are mirrabella or phillips

I'd use LEDs for effect lighting. See trucker stores for all sorts of LED light assemblies.

For some totally useless information, one nickname for those lamps is "Frosty Bulbs".(As in soft serve ice cream.)
