Hi all i just found this site and its great. My question is were can a person find online a comparison of german wiring diagram symbols to there american standard. I have recently been working on some german machine tools at work and can't find any conversions for the prints. i have figured out most of them by following through the prints and knowing what should be there but it would be nice to have a chart that compares german to american symbol.

Hello & welcome!

I thought it would be relatively easy to find an on-line list of European symbols, but I haven't been able to come up with much. There are some relevant IEC standards (nos. 117, 60617), but most of the links to these I could find are for sales of heavy-duty reference books (some at $120 a time!).

There are a few symbols mentioned here:
www.ieconsult.fr/Part%203.htm

I also found another article from an electronics journal which looks at schematic differences and notation in a general way:
www.nutsvolts.com/PDF_Files/circuit.pdf

This one has a handy comparison of logic-gate symbols, the non-American versions of which can be very confusing. It includes ANSI, BS, IEC, and commonly used German variants.
