406.9(B)(1)...is a non colored #10 tek screw ok?
i dont think so, but the foreman says yes.
also are #10 tek screws ok for securing meter base covers? (others were using these screws instead of the screws the equipment came with (square d 5 meter - meter bases))?

Mike, 406.(B)(1) applies to the screw that is factory installed on the yoke of a receptacle. Are you removing and replacing this screw with a tec screw? Did you intend to refer to 250.8? If so I would classify a tec scre as a sheet metal screw. In my opinion the screws provided by the manufacturer are requied to be used on the meter cover. Don

I have been told the same as you Mike_Riverside. But i always do it my way with the equipment that came with it or drill out and use a regular nut and bolt.
same with hanging conduit alot of guys at our shop will secure the one hole straps using TEK screws. and i disagree with them i just don't trust TEK screws for these types of applications, they strip out easy and tend to come loose over time. I always hang using my Unibit and nut and bolts takes little longer but i trust it.

Opinions are like fingers- most of us have a handful of them! I say that any screw that threads into the correctly sized hole for its' threads is OK. Therefore, a Teks screw is ok, as it drill the right size hole. An ordinary sheet metal, or dryall screw, that just happen to 'fit' into an existing hole is NOT ok. Of course, both Joe Tedesco and Mike Holt disagree with me on this. I do hope that someone brought this up for the 2005 code!

I've never seen a green tek screw...
Do you paint it? Green Sharpie?
"...not readily removable..."
Hmmmmm...

The NEC says nothing about the screw size and hole nor does it specify specific types of sheet metal screws. It simply says sheet metal screws shall not be used. A tek screw is a type of sheet metal screw and not a "listed means" therfore it is a violation.

John:
For your information, I already sent in a proposal for an earlier code to clarify the "sheet metal screw" subject, asking for machine threads and it was rejected for some reason I cannot remember.
