Chicago supposedly insists on everything having to go in pipe. Usually those are just individual wires being fished into the pipe.

Some commercial buildings are wired this way, to make it easier to rewire a circuit without ripping holes in the wall, I suppose. I know that's how my office was done.

The armored clad cable I talk about uses a spiral, flexible steel jacket that protects the cable. It's meant for indoor use and essentially done like this:

Individually insulated conductors bundled up with an aluminium "bonding strip" (that is NOT supposed to be used as a ground).

This is wrapped up in strong brown paper. In turn, the spiral metal sheath is wrapped around this entire bundle. Tough stuff. You won't have rodents chewing their way into this.
