Hi all, I am a newbie to this forum. Hopefully I am posting in the right group. I am a retired geophysicist (airborne mineral and oil exploration) and now play at woodworking, machining and DIY stuff.

I have come across a 5 kva brushless self regulating motor alternator. The alternator is made by Mecc Alte type AR1130B9/254 similar to the one in this link

http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CC4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.meccalte.com%2Fsend_file.php%3Ffileid%3DAR1%2520commercio%2520old&ei=UD3XUoqrCuur2AWD3oHYAQ&usg=AFQjCNFzG1i-NY_RDelP5DIoUfEN8GmmvQ&sig2=1Q3BsgOb4Hpe4dMIoU-Ayg&bvm=bv.59568121,d.b2I

Can someone kindly point me to or explain the theory of operation. Internet searches have yielded nothing for me. The armature has two slightly helical poles with apparently independendant windings. Each winding closed with a diode and varistor in parallel. There is a capacitor associated with the stator output. This particular model provides both 110 and 220 vac 1 phase.

Thanks in advance, John.
