I'm an electrician, and my wife is a hairstylist. I couldn't resist taking a picture of this old school perm machine. This machine is retired and sits in a museum in North Platte, Nebraska.

It looks to me as though each roller/clip contains its own individual heating element, hence all the twisted-pair flex running to them.
