I seriously want to move there someday! I researched a bit on the internet and found reference to the SA code and the ETU.

Objectively, can someone tell me a good book to prepare me for Australian wiring and tell me the work outlook, how the residential new construction and remodel is, and how the commercial/industrial is. I really like doing it all, from hacking and slashing(as an artform of course) to dialed-in sophisticated installations.

I've heard electricians are in high demand down there, but that can be said for almost anywhere. What is the REAL deal?

Hi Steve,
Welcome to ECN, first off. [Linked Image]
The Standards currently used here are AS/NZS 3000.
There are also other Standards that you should read.
That is for any general place, there are additional Standards for things like Domestic places and Cables to be installed in them places.

Just like anything you have to be registered here to get the downloads for free or pay silly amounts for them.
Best of luck mate,
Mike. [Linked Image]

you should be able to download a draft copy of the next as/nz3000 standard for free at this address. Plenty of work in the industrial/mining sector in sth Australia. Companies here have been recruiting in Sth Africa alot. You can expect to earn $50k to 100K plus 9% superanuation in these sectors dependant on experiance. you will get dirty though. typical labour hire rate for olympic dam (copper uranium silver and gold BHP billiton) is $32 hr for electrical, $35 for instrumentation and $39 for dual trade. This mine will start an expansion in about mid to late 2008. when complete it will be the largest open cut mine in the world with a 10000 man camp and fly in fly out from Adelaide. Your biggest issue will be lisencing, there is plenty of well paid work if you know your stuff.
